Containment Laboratory (Cat 3)

Maintenance in Progress in Cat 3 labTraditionally formaldehyde has been the agent of choice for the decontamination of category 3 laboratories, both for the room itself and for microbiological safety cabinet decontamination. However with formaldehyde recently being classified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organisation, the industry is looking for safer alternatives.

With increasingly more efficacy data being published against Cat 3 organisms,  hydrogen peroxide is one such alternative. Click here for a published paper on Efficacy of hydrogen peroxide against Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (TB) (1)

The automated fogging process can be used to provide a 6-log bio-decontamination both of the laboratory and the safety cabinets within the laboratory.

It is common practice that microbiological safety cabinets are fumigated prior to being serviced for routine maintenance, but you might wonder in what scenarios might you want to decontaminate the room itself? If so, read on….

Hydrogen peroxide fogging of cat 3 lab

(i) in the event of a spillage of microbiological organisms. We can validate the decontamination process beforehand and provide you with a documented report so that you have a procedure ready in place in the event that the unthinkable happens.

(ii) before scheduled maintenance of other equipment in the lab. Health & Safety Officers want to eliminate any risk and ensure the welfare of contractors who calibrate and maintain common lab equipment such as fridges, freezers & autoclaves. We are now visiting more and more cat 3 labs on a 6-monthly basis to perform this service.

(iii) annual bio-decontamination to reset the background bioburden.

If we can be of any help, we would be delighted to discuss your application with you. You can contact us through our online contact form (by clicking here) or via our details at the top of this page.
